New Rochelle's history began with Thomas Pell's purchase of land from the Siwanoy Indians in 1654. Thirty-four years later, in order to escape religious persecution in France, thousands of Huguenots (French Protestants) began settling the area. Their new home was named after La Rochelle, the port they had set out from in France.
